The roots of the Six-Day War can be traced back to disputes over shared resources, particularly water. In the mid-1960s, Israel began utilizing the Sea of Galilee as its primary freshwater reservoir. This drew the ire of Syria, which controlled the Golan Heights, the streams of which fed the Sea of Galilee. In an attempt to divert these waters, Syria initiated the construction of a canal in 1964, inadvertently sparking a countdown to war.
