Part 4/10:
The Darfur conflict erupted in February 2003 when two rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), took up arms against the Sudanese government. Their grievances stemmed from systemic neglect and marginalization of non-Arab groups in the Darfur region. The government's response was to arm Arab militias known as Janjaweed, unleashing a campaign of terror that included ethnic cleansing.
