Part 3/8:
Cape Town is not merely a beautiful tourist destination; it also houses sprawling townships—areas often afflicted by extreme poverty and crime. In these communities, which were historically marginalized under apartheid, lawlessness has become commonplace. Crime rates here are staggering, with residents enduring killings, violent thefts, and drug trafficking on a day-to-day basis. The police, stretched thin and under-resourced, often seem unable to contain the rampant violence.
As a result, many residents have become increasingly vigilant, arming themselves and taking drastic measures to secure their homes. Security systems, high walls, and even metal spikes are common in neighborhoods, all testaments to a life lived under the constant threat of violence.
