Cambodia, once a thriving center of the Khmer Empire, became a French protectorate in the 19th century. Though the French abolished slavery, they also exploited the country's resources and repressed local dissent. After gaining independence in 1953, under King Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia initially maintained a neutral stance in the Cold War. But underlying tensions with neighboring Vietnam soon escalated into chaos.
