By the 19th century, Lagos had undergone significant transformations due to the influence of European nations. The British targeted Lagos not only as a strategic slave port but also for its economic potential. In 1851, the British seized control after a series of confrontations with local leadership, thus establishing Lagos as a Crown Colony. They introduced infrastructural advancements, such as the first railway, medical reforms, and the establishment of a colonial government.
