The rise of communism brought short-lived stability and safety from violence, albeit through forced assimilation and loss of their cultural identity. As communism crumbled, the Roma faced renewed hostility. Ethnic cleansing and pogroms emerged as a common trend, driving many to flee further west in search of refuge.
