New York City's streets teem with life, but one of the most iconic images of the city is undoubtedly the hot dog cart. Intrigued by the allure of these street vendors, I set out to explore how profitable they really are, what it takes to run one, and the challenges involved. My journey began not at dawn, but the night before, as I prepared for a day in the life of Dan Rossi, known as the "hot dog king" of New York.

A Night in the Van

To understand Dan’s world, I spent the night in a rented van alongside him outside The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every night, Dan sleeps in his van to reserve his prime selling spot. As we awaited dawn, I prepared myself for what would be a grueling day ahead.
