The concept of a digital twin can be traced back to various significant programs and developments, one notable example being NASA's Apollo program from the 1960s and '70s. During the Apollo missions, NASA utilized simulators, essentially acting as digital twins, to mirror conditions of spacecraft during missions. This methodology proved invaluable during the Apollo 13 mission, where data from the malfunctioning spacecraft were fed into ground-based simulators, allowing engineers to devise solutions for safely returning the stranded crew.
Despite its origins in aerospace engineering, the application of digital twins is expanding into numerous other domains, including civil infrastructure, buildings, renewable energy systems, and even medical applications like personalized treatment plans.
