In 1968, Stabler's dream of playing professional football materialized when he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders. Though opportunities were initially scarce due to established quarterbacks on the roster, Stabler's resolve did not wane. After a season spent away from football, he returned to the Raiders, determined to prove himself.
Over the next few seasons, he gradually ascended to prominence, demonstrating his skills in significant games including the 1972 playoff match against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite a heartbreaking loss marked by the Immaculate Reception, Stabler's performance laid the groundwork for his eventual rise to starting quarterback in 1973.
