As tensions simmered between Stabler and Raiders owner Al Davis, the quarterback found himself at odds with management following a series of unimpressive seasons. In 1979, he was traded to the Houston Oilers, marking the end of an era with the Raiders, where he had cemented his place as the franchise's all-time leader in numerous offensive categories.
Stabler's time with the Oilers and later the New Orleans Saints was marked by inconsistency. Despite showing flashes of his former brilliance, injuries and internal team strife plagued his final seasons. After hanging up his cleats in 1984, he transitioned into a career as a sports commentator and took on charitable efforts, marking a productive post-football life.
