As Heineken expanded its reach across Africa, it became embroiled in a multitude of controversies that questioned the ethical responsibilities of global corporations. In Burundi and Nigeria, investigations uncovered patterns of corruption and exploitation that had severe societal implications. Perhaps the most damaging was the company's alleged complicity in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, where local operations of Heineken reportedly supplied resources that fueled violence.
