The term “wokeness” has garnered attention in discussions dedicated to cultural dynamics in contemporary society. Defined here as an aggressive push for diversity, equity, and inclusion, wokeness is centered on an implicit belief that any disparities in outcomes are evidence of discriminatory practices. Herein lies the problem: such a belief system often fails to recognize that differences in outcomes can stem from myriad cultural, environmental, and historical factors, rendering the concept of systematic oppression overly simplistic.
