The Cultivation of Sugar Cane: A Comprehensive Process
To understand how sugar is produced, we first look at the careful process of growing sugar cane. The journey begins with obtaining seeds, which involves cutting a sugar cane stem into 12 to 18-inch segments, making sure each piece contains three to four buds. Researchers analyze various sugar cane varieties in laboratories to select the most promising candidates for cultivation. This leads to the primary nursery stage, where heat-treated seedlings are planted and monitored for resilience and adaptability over a period of 6 to 8 months. Following this, seedlings are transferred to a secondary nursery for further growth and assessment until they are ready for commercial distribution.
