The traditional manufacturing hierarchy included several levels—from factory floor workers to supervisors and executives. However, the allure of moving away from factory work led many to pursue management positions, leaving a vacuum at the bottom of the employment pyramid. The shift towards an increasingly service-oriented economy sought to elevate the quality of jobs; however, this transition has not resulted in comparable benefits.
