Historically, late-night television has been a place where viewers from varying backgrounds could gather around the television, share laughter, and briefly escape their daily worries. Late-night shows became the “watering holes” of society, where partisanship took a back seat to comedy and shared experiences. Unfortunately, today’s late night shows have largely abandoned this role, as they cater to a specific audience while alienating potential viewers. The only remaining unifying cultural event appears to be the Super Bowl, once a source of common ground among diverse audiences.
