The workers at Windscale, who operated under the Official Secrets Act, had their movements controlled closely, often transported discreetly to and from the site. The facility was pivotal for maintaining the UK’s nuclear arsenal, manufacturing Plutonium and Tritium, vital ingredients for thermonuclear weapons during an era dominated by the Cold War. However, on that fateful October day, 11 tonnes of Uranium fuel were ablaze, releasing a cocktail of radioactive materials including Iodine-131, Cesium-137, and Polonium-210 into the atmosphere.
