Sellafield's waste is categorized into High-Level Waste (HLW) and Intermediate-Level Waste. HLW remains intensely radioactive for centuries, requiring robust storage solutions such as stainless steel tanks. Some isotopes, like Technetium-99, remain hazardous for over a million years. Intermediate-Level Waste is encapsulated in concrete or stainless steel intended for a shorter lifespan of safe storage. Yet, both categories represent only temporary fixes to a long-term issue.
