As it currently stands, customers can manage their Kindle books through the Amazon website, allowing for downloads to PCs or Macs. This capability provides users the ability to create offline backups of their digital libraries, ensuring their purchases are preserved independent of Kindle devices or the Amazon ecosystem. However, Amazon plans to restrict this feature, limiting access to Kindle books solely through their devices.

While users will still be able to send books to their Kindles from the Amazon website, the removal of the download option means that once the change takes place, users will no longer be able to store or back up their eBooks on their personal computers.
