Galileo circumvented this dilemma by proposing a radical shift in philosophical thought. Instead of asserting that qualities persist in the physical world, he argued that these attributes resided in the consciousness of the observer. The vivid red of the tomato or the spiciness of paprika no longer existed as definitive attributes of the objects themselves; rather, they became aspects of personal experience. In this view, if a tree crashes in a desolate forest, it produces no sound without an observer to impart existence upon that experience.
