The landscape of music royalties is complex. PROs, such as ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, are tasked with issuing licenses, collecting royalties, and distributing them to songwriters and publishers. However, there are also newer entities like Global Music Rights and Pio Music Rights, which have emerged in the last decade, leading to competitive tensions and potential ambiguities in revenue distribution.
The existence of these various organizations raises significant issues, primarily the splintering of representation for songwriters and the potential for misunderstandings about who gets paid—and how much.
