Part 3/8:
Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced plans to bolster police presence, deploying an additional 750 officers to subway platforms and 300 more to overnight trains in an effort to mitigate crime. This initiative is born out of a significant public outcry regarding safety in the subways. However, the effectiveness of merely increasing police visibility has come under scrutiny. Critics argue that the mere presence of officers has not deterred criminals, many of whom have repeatedly operated with impunity. This has led some to speculate that a “stiffened police presence” may merely force crimes to shift to less-policed areas rather than curtailing them altogether.
