Despite this temptation to classify entropy purely as a measure of disorder, it is also an indicator of information. Specifically, entropy quantifies our ignorance about the configuration of particles within a system. When we talk about the thermodynamic properties of a system—such as temperature, pressure, or volume—we are often only scratching the surface. The true state of the system comprises numerous possible arrangements of its microscopic components, referred to as microstates. The more we know about these microstates, the less entropy there is in the system.
