The Role of Information and Entropy
The resolution of Maxwell's paradox hinges upon an important realization regarding information processing. Although the demon initially seems to act without impacting the entropy of the universe, it ultimately requires memory to perform its operations. The act of recording the particles' states, and altering its memory from a known state to an unknown one, inherently raises the entropy of the demon's memory. When the demon resets its memory, energy is expended, producing heat and resulting in an increase of entropy elsewhere.
