With Whittaker and Chibnall leaving, the return of Russell T Davies was heralded as a hopeful sign. Davies had successfully resurrected the show from a decade-long hiatus, and the return of popular actor David Tennant promised a narrative revival. However, the anticipation was short-lived. Many quickly discovered that while Russell T Davies might have returned, he was not the same showrunner who had redefined the series in 2005.
