Sponsored by T-Mobile, the system promises to revolutionize how ball and strike calls are made. ABS is not designed to replace umpires entirely but rather to provide a technological backbone that can enhance decision-making through challenges.
Starting in 2025, players will have the ability to challenge two ball or strike calls per game. If a challenge is upheld, the player retains the right to challenge again, creating a strategy element for players and coaches. The system employs the same technology widely recognized in tennis, known as Hawkeye, which provides rapid, accurate assessments of calls on the field.
