Despite winning the case, the journey did not conclude there. Delta Airlines appealed the decision, still clinging to the belief that Pettit was unfit to fly. Lasting over six and a half years, the legal battle only highlighted the lengths to which Delta would go to suppress criticism.
In October 2022, administrative law judge Scott Morris issued a ruling that unequivocally condemned Delta’s actions. He labeled their use of psychiatric evaluations as an abuse of the system, emphasizing that it should not be weaponized to enforce compliance amongst pilots.
