Despite the daunting challenges, the first phase of Porto’s Metro opened in 2002. By 2006, the initial network seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of residents, and ridership soon doubled. The year 2023 marked another milestone with 79 million trips recorded, illustrating the Metro's crucial role in urban commuting.
Interestingly, surveys indicated a significant demographic among frequent riders: young, middle-class women under 24 years old. This demographic insight suggests improvements in the system’s safety and reliability. Furthermore, riders reported increased accessibility between neighborhoods, fostering economic opportunities across the Doro River.
