Despite their pivotal role and the thousands of lives they are credited with saving—between 15,000 and 30,000 American lives—details of the Ghost Army's operations remained largely classified for decades. With the war officially over, the men of the Ghost Army returned to civilian life and kept their secrets well-hidden until a revelatory article in 1985 brought their story to light.
A dedicated society emerged to preserve their legacy, with filmmaker Rick Beyer leading the charge to ensure their contributions were not forgotten. In March 2024, after an almost 80-year delay, the Ghost Army was finally honored with a Congressional Gold Medal.
