Although the sisters were allowed to remain, they were no longer the masters of their destiny; the government had become their landlord, and they could no longer hunt or plant large crops as they had always done. Even so, the Walker sisters maintained their connection to the land as best they could, continuing to raise livestock and grow what they could in a garden. They adapted to their changed circumstances, embodying the simple joys of Appalachian life.
