Conversely, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian counterpart, the Christian Social Union (CSU), emerged as the leading parties with approximately 28% of the vote, although this result represents one of their worst performances in history. More noteworthy is the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a newer right-wing party that more than doubled its previous results, reaching 20.8%. Additionally, the leftist party, originating from East Germany’s former communist regime, also demonstrated unexpected electoral strength.
