As the 1970s progressed, the classic heavy metal sound began to crystallize. Bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motörhead pushed the envelope further, embracing speed, melody, and showmanship. Not only did the music evolve, but so did the culture surrounding it. Metal concerts became spaces for fans to express solidarity, exemplified by the term "headbanger," which emerged as fans began to engage physically with the music.
The Thrash Metal Revolution of the 80s
The dawn of the 80s brought forth some of the most exciting developments in metal history. Doom metal emerged from the shadows of Black Sabbath, taking its themes to darker depths. Around the same time, Venom's aggressive sound and unapologetic Satanic imagery marked the arrival of extreme metal.
