Part 6/8:
In response to the continual Israeli settlement in occupied territories, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) emerged, calling for the creation of a liberated Palestine. Tensions erupted in the form of the First Intifada in 1987, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. This led to the Oslo Accords, aiming to negotiate a peace settlement by dividing the West Bank into areas controlled by Israel and the Palestinians.
However, peace efforts faltered, and the Second Intifada erupted in 2000, a continuation of violence fueled by unresolved issues surrounding Jerusalem, refugees, and settlements. Ariel Sharon's visit to a sensitive religious site triggered significant unrest.
