The establishment of the Socialist Federal Republic aimed to unite these groups under a single banner, consisting of Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia. Despite these efforts, nationalism and ethnic tensions were persistent problems. An era of relative stability and unity was achieved under President Josip Broz Tito; however, his death in 1980 catalyzed the exposure of underlying ethnic divisions that were only mitigated during his rule.
