Part 6/8:
Despite government pledges of financial support—16 million euros allocated in 2022 for the protection and stabilisation of Stromboli—the pace of change is maddeningly slow. Carolina Barau, the environmental counselor for the Aeolian Islands, acknowledges the bureaucratic hurdles that hinder timely action. Plans are in place to rehabilitate Stromboli's 12 streams and rebuild infrasturcture destroyed by past storms, yet for Dominico, this is insufficient.
Dominico voices frustration over the lack of proactive measures. He believes that regular maintenance of the streams, river clean-ups, and planting more trees could have mitigated many of the island’s current troubles. Instead, residents find themselves mired in a cycle of recovery with every storm threatening to unleash more destruction.
