Among the most iconic names from the groupie era is Sable Starr, born Sabel Hay Shields. Raised in privilege, Starr’s life took a turn when she began frequenting Los Angeles' Sunset Strip at just 14. The allure of rock stardom pulled her in, and by 15, she was in a whirlwind relationship with Johnny Thunders of The New York Dolls. Though she became the poster girl for the rock 'n' roll scene, Starr later described her toxic relationship with Thunders as one that “tried to destroy” her identity, compelling her to step back from the groupie lifestyle.
