The island's crisis is compounded by a relentless twenty-year economic downturn, compounded further by natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than receiving meaningful aid for recovery, Puerto Ricans have faced skyrocketing costs, privatized services, and widespread displacement.
