Born in Switzerland in 1875, Jung began his career working collaboratively with Freud but eventually broke away to form his own theories. Unlike Freud, who emphasized repressed sexual desires, Jung profoundly expanded our comprehension of the unconscious mind. He made crucial distinctions between the personal unconscious—an individual's repressed experiences—and the collective unconscious, which comprises universal patterns and symbolic images known as archetypes.
