But why would any part of us deliberately thwart the very goals we wish to achieve? Jung believed that this stems primarily from the Shadow, which contains not only negative attributes but also vital, creative energies. As we learn which aspects of ourselves are acceptable in our childhood environment, we may repress others, pushing them into the Shadow where they continue to influence us unconsciously.
The repercussions of this repression can manifest as self-sabotage—the disowned elements may emerge in distorted forms, contributing to challenges in personal and professional life.
