Tacoma not only faced challenges from Seattle but also struggled against emerging cities like Portland. Portland's geographical advantages allowed it to thrive despite its inland port issues. Tacoma’s maritime trade simply couldn't compete with Seattle's extensive shipping traffic. The lack of progressive labor movements for port workers in Tacoma also hampered its economic competitiveness.
Starting from the early 1900s, as Boeing and other major corporations established themselves in Seattle, the city became a hub for various industries, further entrenching its supremacy in the region.
