Holmes's vision evolved rapidly. By the end of her first year, she pivoted to creating a blood testing device utilizing a cartridge system. Unlike traditional methods requiring syringe samples, her envisioned machine would allow for tests to be conducted almost instantly at home, reporting results online.
The Anatomy of Deceit
Despite its large ambitions, several fundamental flaws plagued the Theranos technology. Attempting to miniaturize complex blood-testing machinery proved nearly impossible due to interference from various components, which could distort results. The requirement for a sufficient volume of blood from a simple prick further complicated matters. Yet, despite warnings from scientists and engineers, Holmes pushed her team towards development of an unfeasible product.
