Alphonse “Al” Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents from Naples. By 1931, he had risen to infamy as America's most notorious gangster. However, the legal system would soon catch up to him—not for the myriad of violent crimes he committed but for tax evasion. In October of that year, he was tried in federal court, facing a simple charge that laid bare the vicious underbelly of his empire. The trial would mark the beginning of the end for Capone.
The prosecutor assigned to the case was Eliot Ness, the ever-determined leader of the “Untouchables.” Capone’s arrogance clashed with Ness’ relentless pursuit, setting the stage for an epic battle between good and evil which would resonate through the annals of American history.
