As the years rolled on, the dynamics of drug trafficking began to shift. Guzmán found mentors who introduced him to the burgeoning cocaine trade of the late 1970s and early 1980s, notably forming alliances with established figures such as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, who would cement Guzmán's status in the drug underworld. Guzmán's rise coincided with the demise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the late 1980s after law enforcement crackdowns created a power vacuum that left room for the Sinaloa Cartel to flourish.
