Part 5/10:
First Captures and Escapes
In 1993, El Chapo’s initial capture came during a seemingly ordinary getaway in Guatemala, leading to his extradition to Mexico. Convicted and sentenced to over 20 years, El Chapo became a legend, both feared and revered. His influence persisted within and outside the prison walls, where he orchestrated operations through bribes to guards and set the stage for his audacious escape in 2001. His jailbreak utilized a laundry cart, enabling his exit from a maximum-security facility, which resulted in a significant embarrassment for Mexican authorities.
