The Effects of Changing Consumption Patterns
One primary factor resulting in the decline of theatrical comedies is the rise of streaming platforms. As DVD sales plummeted—by around 86% between 2006 and 2019—and Blu-ray sales joined the downward trend, studios have adjusted their business strategies. Traditionally, comedy films depended on earning substantial revenue from home video sales, which provided a safety net for lower-grossing titles. In contrast, today's studios prefer safer, more guaranteed profits, often sidelining mid-budget comedies altogether.
