Alongside his in-ring antics, The Honky Tonk Man is also known for his outspoken nature and the controversial opinions he has shared over the years. He hasn’t shied away from criticizing wrestling legends such as Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, and Jerry Lawler, often diving into personal matters in addition to their in-ring abilities. While some fans appreciate his bluntness, others view him as a troublemaker—one always stirring the pot.
His candor maintained his relevancy long after his in-ring prime. However, such unfiltered commentary also alienated him from parts of the wrestling community, leading him to be seen as a "grumpy veteran" unwilling to accept the evolution of wrestling.
