If signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, the bill would facilitate a systematic approach for compensating individuals wrongfully convicted. Currently, the compensation review requires legislative approval on a case-by-case basis, which has proven to be cumbersome and ineffective. The new legislation also proposes a standardized compensation of $75,000 for every year of wrongful incarceration, with an additional $25,000 for each year spent on death row.
