Part 4/11:
This internal control has yielded three core advantages: speed, innovation, and cost control. By designing its own battery cells and machinery, Tesla can refine its production processes continually, tightening supply chains while lowering costs per kilowatt-hour.
Evolution of Battery Technology
Initially, Tesla's early models utilized standard 18650 cells, borrowed from laptop technology. However, as the company scaled up, it evolved to 2170 cells, offering improved energy density and cost efficiency. The most significant leap came with the introduction of 4680 cells, a complete redesign that abandons traditional tabs that increase resistance and heat. This new configuration streamlines production, allowing for greater efficiency and scalability.
