Part 5/12:
With its roots in the Arts and Crafts movement, the American Craftsman style gained prominence in the early 20th century. This style emphasized handcrafted designs and natural materials, notably spreading through California as the California Bungalow. Influenced by figures like Gustaf Stickley, who championed the movement through magazines, Craftsman homes featured low-pitched roofs and built-in furniture at affordable prices for the middle class. Although the style declined after the 1930s, it remains a treasured segment of American architectural history, exemplified by the famed Gamble House in Pasadena.
