Societal Shifts
Cultural shifts in Japan have also contributed to declining birth rates. Historically, marriage was a common pathway to parenthood, but as women gain success in the workforce, societal norms haven’t adapted to reflect their changing roles. With less than 500,000 marriages recorded in 2023—the lowest number since 1917—many are questioning the sustainability of traditional family structures.
