After a series of releases from major organizations, Anneli found himself contemplating a future in independent baseball. While many players see the independent leagues as a second chance, for Anneli, they represented a point of reflection; after years of injuries and inconsistent play, he evaluated his desire to continue and ultimately chose not to pursue an uncertain future in independent ball.
